South Africa have failed to qualify for the World Cup finals in Brazil. They were disappointing when hosting the tournament in 2010, where they set an unwanted record of being the first host nation to fail to qualify for the group stages. They failed to qualify for 2014 after finishing behind Ethiopia in the first round of qualifying within the African qualifiers. The South African team are obviously experiencing tough times. You can read below what we wrote about their chances ahead of the 2010 tournament.
South Africa would never normally be considered as World Cup winners but in 2010 they host the World Cup and this gives them a huge advantage.
South Africa have some talented players but they aren’t world beaters. Despite this they performed admirably at the Confederations Cup in 2009, also held in South Africa. They even almost beat Spain in the third place playoff and a repeat of that sort of form would see them reach at least the semi final.
South Africa’s preparations for the World Cup have been going on for years, two years ago they took a youth side to the African Cup of Nations to give them big tournament experience. This looks to have paid off and as they are still an improving side who knows how far they could really get.
Being in the first seeds in the World Cup draw meant they were handed an easier task of qualifying then they should have and they should definitely reach the knockout stages. Once there most sides will want to avoid playing the hosts.
