New Zealand have failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil after appearing for the World Cup for the first time in South Africa. You can read what we wrote about New Zealand’s chances for that tournament below. New Zealand were unfortunate not to qualify for 2014, after wining the Oceania qualifying section they faced a play-off against Mexico which they lost.
New Zealand were one of the outsiders back in 2010, and if you fancy betting on an outsider for the 2014 World Cup, our tip for potential dark horses are Russia. They have a relatively easy group in Group H, and as long as they avoid Germany in the round of 16 have a strong chance of making the Quarter Finals. Russia are currently 7/2 to reach the Quarter Finals, or 100/1 to win the tournament outright, a price that you could easily trade out for a profit should they qualify from their group.
New Zealand go into the World Cup as the least likely winners in the bookie’s opinion, and they look to have that about right. New Zealand qualified from the very weak Oceania section, and they still had to play a playoff to reach the World Cup, against Bahrain, who got less points in qualification that North Korea. This is an indication of how bad New Zealand are.
New Zealand don’t actually have the hardest group in World Cup history, they face an aging Italy side, a good Paraguay team and also Slovakia.
Despite not having the hardest group it is still hard to see where any New Zealand points. or even goals, come from. They are simply here to make up the numbers.
