It’s the cause of debate across the country for many months before the tournament – just who is going to make it into England’s World Cup Squad?
Odds for players to make the England World Cup squad
Pundits, Ex-pros, sticker albums and fans all attempt to guess just who Roy Hodgson will pick to get on the plane to Brazil, but while everyone can normally name most of the starting XI – i.e. Rooney, Sturridge, Baines, Hart and Gerrard to name a few – but what about the outsiders attempting to gatecrash Hodgson’s plans?
Traditionally the squad is normally narrowed down once the manager has named his team for the friendly’s earlier in the year, but this year it’s slightly different as plenty of English players are enjoying the form of their lives.
Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Leighton Baines and Steven Gerrard have all had outstanding seasons but so have the younger players in the Premier League: Ross Barkley, Luke Shaw, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge have been incredible all year and some would argue all deserve a place in the squad.
So which players have a massive chance of making England’s World Cup Squad?
It’s very likely that Joe Hart is going to be England’s number one and Hodgson will probably pick another two keepers – possibly Celtic’s Fraser Forster who has had another solid season – he is 1.57 at Ladbrokes and Coral – and Ben Foster, recently back from a International ‘break’ in which he declared himself unavailable for selection, who is 1.62 to make the squad at Ladbrokes.
Luke Shaw – The Southampton left back has had a great season and received his first cap for England during the friendly with Denmark.
He is 3.00 to make the squad at Bet 365/Ladbrokes/Betfred/William Hill
Steven Caulker - Sold to Cardiff by Spurs last summer Caulker has had a good solid season despite Cardiff’s precarious position and at 22, he could form the base of England’s defence for the next few tournaments.
He is 7.00 to make the squad at SkyBet and Bet Victor.
John Flanagan - Flanagan has been brilliant for Liverpool this season after breaking into the first team and has an outside chance of making it onto the plane
He is 21.00 to make the squad at Betfred.
Tom Huddlestone – Huddlestone’s performances for Hull this season have led to massive calls for him to return to the England team. He has been rock solid in midfield with his passing accuracy and has kept Hull ticking over.
He is 34.00 to make the squad at BetVictor.
Gareth Barry – Normally a mainstay in Hodgson’s squads, the Man City midfielder on-loan at Everton has a quiet but solid season in Merseyside.
He is 10.00 to make the squad at Betfair/Unibet.
Rickie Lambert – Lambert scored with his first touch on his England debut back in August 2013 and has had another good season in the Premier League notching 11 goals and 10 assists and has never missed a penalty for Southampton – he has taken 34.
He is 2.5 at Unibet to make the squad.
